At the Dealership

The final stage of the journey, focused on verifying the paperwork, navigating the finance office, and taking delivery of the vehicle.

Before you walk in

By the time the dealership visit takes place, the terms should be finalized in writing. The purpose of the visit is to verify that every figure on the paperwork matches the written agreement, and that the vehicle itself is the one negotiated for and in the expected condition. Any discrepancy is grounds to walk away until the paperwork is corrected.

Notifying the dealer in advance that the visit is intended to be efficient sets expectations on both sides. Ask them to have the vehicle washed and ready, and to send any documentation they need ahead of time, typically a driver's license, proof of insurance, and employment or income information.

Confirm the vehicle before signing

Before any paperwork is signed, the specific vehicle being purchased should be inspected and driven. For a new vehicle, this confirms the exact VIN agreed to in writing matches what is on the lot and that nothing about the vehicle has changed since the negotiation began. For a used vehicle, this is the final check before purchase: tire condition, interior wear, dashboard warning lights, and overall feel during the drive. Any concern surfaced at this stage is a valid reason to delay or walk away.

The finance office

After the purchase or lease has been negotiated, the buyer will move to the finance office to complete the paperwork. The finance manager will also present additional products for purchase, including extended warranties, GAP coverage, paint protection, and various service plans. Each product should be evaluated independently rather than accepted as part of the transaction.

When a product is presented, the appropriate next step is to request the full menu with itemized pricing in writing, then step out of the office to evaluate the terms using the AI tool of choice. Once that review is complete, the buyer returns with a decision on each item: which to accept, and which to decline.

Verify the paperwork before signing

Every number and detail on the paperwork should be verified against the written agreement before any signature is provided. The verification list includes the VIN, selling price, APR, loan term, all fees, all rebates, trade-in payoff figures, warranty terms, and any accessories included in the agreement. Any discrepancy should be corrected on the paperwork before signing.
